Ayurveda is the system of treatment followed by Indians since 2000 BC. Ayurveda means the science of our life. Ayurveda treatment is very effective and it gives positive results to incurable diseases.The blemishes that accumulate in and body is expelled by suitable methods by the treatment. Ayurveda focuses on the cause of the diseases or not the disease as it is. Every year or frequently we overhaul a running engine for its smooth function.

Human body like a running machine which is under pressure and the physical and mental problems needs a periodical 'Panchakarma' treatment for rejuvenation or refreshment.

'Panchakarma' consists of five types of treatments.

1. Vamanam

Here the patient is made to vomit . So as to clean the abdomen. It is a remedy for diseases related to ‘Kapha’.

2. Nasyam

Medicine in liquid form is poured in to nose in this treatment. Prevents severe head ache, jaundice etc.

3. Virechanam

This treatment is the remedial measure for skin problem and intestinal disorders

4. Vasthi

Applying medicine (herbal oils, herbal extracts) through the rectum for a particular period. This treatment is for arthritis, Paralysis, gastric complaints and constant Constipation.

5. Rektha Moksham

A small wound is made in the body with a clean knife. Then a leech is brought to the wound to suck the blood from the wound and then the impure blood is removed from the body

There are some other treatments in Ayurveda also in Panchakarma to make the body healthy.

6. General Massage

Herbal oil is applied from head to foot and pressure is applied all over the body for about 50-60 minutes. It is advisable to take general massage for a healthy body and mind.

This treatment keeps your body young and energetic. For softness of skin and strong muscle, this treatment is very effective. It prevents skin diseases. Take note that patients who are advised not to take bath should not under go this treatment. Those who have severe Kapha(cough) do not go for massage. This massage should not be taken immediately after Vamanam (vomiting treatment ) and Virechanam (Purgation).

The duration of treatment is decided according to the vatha, Pitha, Kapha nature of the body. The oil advised for massage and other treatments varies from person to person.

Generally Dhanwantharam oil or Bala oil or extract are good for persons of Vatha nature. Balaswagandhadi extract and oil prepared with gooseberry is advised for Pitha nature and oil prepared with pepper is good for people with Kapha nature.

7. Udwardharam( Powder Massage)

Herbal Powder is used in this treatment. 50 to 60 minutes are taken to complete this treatment.This treatment is effective to the accumulated fat in the body. It helps to give attractive shape to the body and reduces the weight of the body.

8. Rejuvenation Massage

This massage refreshes strengthens and rejuvenate the body. This treatment is done using both hands and legs. This is done only after examining the body of the patient very carefully. It is not advisable for certain ladies (especially massage with foot). To increase Vitality , to correct dislocation, to reduce mental tension, this treatment is very effective.

9. Elakizhi

More than nine different types of herbal leaves are cut in to small pieces and mixed with special salt, grated coconut , gingerly seeds and seven other Ayurveda medicines put in a kizhi or cotton ball. This ball is soaked in warm oil and pressed on the body especially on the required parts of the body.

This expels the blemishes deposited in the body. Also It is a good treatment for swelling due to bruises, blocks etc.

10. Dhara

In this process herbal oil is poured in stream in a particular part of the body. Sirodhara is the important one among Dharas. Ayurveda oil or Herbal extract in poured continuously on the forehead for about 30 to 45 minutes for seven to 21 days. It is a cure for mental disorders, skin diseases rheumatism, Parkinson, eye diseases etc. It is a good treatment for brain development and increase memory.

11. Thakara Dhara

Dhara using the mixture of curd and herbal extract is Thakara Dhara. This treatment is very effective one to prevent premature greying of hair, weakness, frequent head-ache, joint pain, indigestion, psoriasis etc.

12. Pizhichil

Luke worm oil or herbal extracts are applied all over the body by trained therapists. The oil is poured from a small height with a towel soaked in oil. Therapists in a special rhythmic way runs their hands all over from top to bottom for about 60-90 minutes. Generally it should be done for 7 days to 21 days.

This treatment is very effective one for Rheumatic diseases, Paralysis, Sexual weakness, nervous disorders, joint pains etc.

13. Navarakizhi

This treatment is done after the process of removal of the blemishes of the body. Here a special type of rice - Navara mixed with certain Ayurvedic medicines and milk put in a cloth piece and made in to a ball called 'Kizhi' This ball is put in warm oil and pressed on the oil smeared body. This energiser the weak cells and make the body young. It removes the wrinkles of the skin. It is also good for paralysis.

14. Steam bath

The patient is allowed to stand or sit in a wooden box. Medicated steam is passed in to the box in a moderate and affordable temperature. Body sweats and perspires. The process lasts for 10 to 25 minutes This Particular treatment expels the blemishes and fat from the body.

15. Sirovasthi

A hat that reaches upto the ears is made and fixed on the head. The bottom of the hat is kept in tact with flour paste to avoid leakage of oil and the hat is tightened with a ribbon. After that warm oils like Dhanwantharam or ksheerabala is poured on the head.

The oil is allowed to remain there for 30 to 45 minutes . The suitable time for this treatment is between 2pm and 6pm.

It is a remedial treatment for frequent headache, cataract, hearing defect, dryness in mouth, deceases related to the nervous disorders in head especially brain etc.

16. Kadivasthi

A herbal paste boundary is made on the pain affected part of the back and warm Ayurveda oil is filled in to the boundary. The wear and tear of the bones are lessened by this treatment. About 30 to 45 minutes are taken for it.

17. Urovasthi

Like kadivasthi, medicated warm oil is kept over the chest for 45 minutes. This is an effective remedy for chest pain, Astma and Other respiratory problems.

18. Thala Pothichil (Covering the head with herbals)

Dry gooseberry , Curd, arrow leaves , pancha gandham etc are made in to apart and covers the head with this paste. Plantain leaves castor plant leaves are used to cover the head to keep the paste in tact. This is an effective as Thakaradhara mentioned earlier.

19. Mukha Lepam

Specially prepared paste using herbal powder and fruits is applied on the face and kept for an hour. This cream removes wrinkles and improves the skin tone.

20. Karnapooranam

Medicated oil is poured in to the ear and retained for 10 to 15 minutes. This treatment helps to clear the ears and prevents the wax deposits in the ear and pain.

21. Yoni prakshalanam (Purgation through vagina)

Herbal extracts or Ayurveda oils are poured through the vaginal opening and the uterus and vaginal track are cleaned by this . Diseases related to uterine cavity shall be cured by this treatment and is good for sex diseases and lukeria.

22. Thalam

This is a special treatment for 15 to 45 minutes using herbal powder mixed in ayurveda extracts. It is used as a remedy for mygrains, ENT probles and pneumonia.

23. Lepanam

This treatment takes about 40 minutes to one hour . Herbal leaves , Herbal powder, oil or kashaya are well mixed and smeared all over or part of the body. Pain due to busies, oeduna etc can be easily wiped out by this treatment.

24. Snehapanam ( Purgation by oils or Ghee )

Snehapanam is essential before and after the treatments said above. Cleaning the bowels and intestines is the purpose of this treatment. Middle Aged, Sex weakness, lack of blood in body etc can be cured by this. The Ghee or herbal extract is prescribed only after examining the vatha, pitha, kapha nature of the body. Those who take this treatment should strictly follow the diet control and rest advised by doctor.
